Deset SunsetWe here at Omalweendo Safaris ( are dedicated to give our guests the best possible adventure in the oldest desert in the world. Due to the descent of cold air blown in off the Benguela current, the Namib Desert has maintained its arid status for 80 million years and is believed to be the oldest desert in the world,  its name meaning “vast open spaces”.  It is completely devoid of surface water but bisected by several dry riverbeds and characterized by extensive dunes. We have the most experienced tour-leader in the desert. He is the founding member is Omalweendo Safaris.

Dekker & WillemienDekker Smit (photo right) is one of the most learned and knowledgeable people on the Namib desert and to do your tour with him will give you an unlimited source of information on the Namib in particular and Namibia in general. Your tour leader  is an experienced adventure guide. He will be in radio contact with you at all times and impart a wealth of biological, cultural, historic and four-wheel drive knowledge.

Dunes

If this is going to be your first introduction to the Namib it will really be an exceptional experience. If you are a seasoned desert traveler this is the ultimate!
The adrenaline rush is unparalleled and the dunes along this stretch of Namib are higher and more challenging and require technique to manoeuvre from one dune strait to the next. The magnitude of what awaits you is difficult to express in words. For this tour the emphasis is not only on the adrenaline thrill of dune driving, but also for a special look at the plants; desert creatures and wildlife that make this desert their home.  This history of the diamond mining activities of the previous century and what the industry left behind is one of the most interesting subjects of a journey through this magnificent area. Because of the nature and risk of this route, we focus on mainly on the safety of our guests while driving.

Three meals a day will be prepared by our experienced bush chef in his mobile kitchen, with salads, potjiekos, braais and many other surprises on Desert Kitchen the menu. Some of our overnight stops will be rustic and unusual, but you will never the less at all times be safe, the crew will spare no effort to make you comfortable, provide you with good wholesome food and, most importantly, see that you have a good time. At all camps there will be a toilet and shower tent erected.

Although this self-drive adventure can get “exciting” and is sometimes not a “walk in the park, this is not a 2010-12-18_07-05-50MASDakar Rally and we will at all times practice safe off-road driving techniques. Should you experience any difficulty, our crew do have the knowledge and recovery gear to assist with most off-road driving problems. You must just ensure that you have a vehicle that is capable and sound for the experience with high flotation tyres which must be in excellent condition. The safety of each and everyone of our guests is of utmost importance to us.
